Founded in 1850, Aetna, Inc. (www.aetna.com) is an American diversified
health-care benefits company, which is in the business of providing
a range of traditional and consumer directed health care insurance
products and related services. The company’s products and
services include medical, pharmacy, dental, behavioral health, group
life, long-term care, and disability plans, and medical management
capabilities. Registered with the NYSE and now employing over 27,000
people, it descends directly from Aetna Insurance Company, of Hartford,
Connecticut that issued its first life insurance policy in 1850,
a full thirty years after it had been chartered to enter the business.
In 1996, Aetna sold its property-casualty division to Travelers
and also merged with U.S. Healthcare. The company subsequently changed
its name from Aetna Life & Casualty to Aetna Inc. Aetna had
the distinction of earning a creditable 100% score on the Human
Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index in 2002, and maintained
this rating in 2003 and 2004.
Aetna covers health care, dental, pharmacy, group life, disability,
and long-term care insurance and employee benefits. In 2005, Aetna’s
revenue, operating income and net income were $22.491 billion, $2.670
billion and $1.634 billion respectively. The company has about 15.4
million medical members, 13.3 million dental members, 10.1 million
pharmacy members and 13.0 million group insurance members. It boasts
of a nationwide network of over 735,000 health care professionals,
including more than 437,000 primary care and specialist doctors
and 4,373 hospitals. Aetna benefits are available through employers
in all 50 states, with products and services aimed specifically
for small, mid-sized and large multi-site national employers. The
company also serves individuals and Medicare beneficiaries in certain
markets
