Blue Cross and Blue Shield
of Alabama
As an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association,
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama (www.bcbsal.org) since 1936
has been trying to provide quality health care to people in a caring
manner. It administers health and dental programs for over 3.5 million
individuals spread across the state of Alabama and around the country.
These individuals are spread over 30,000 business houses that include
many of the state’s and country’s largest corporations,
and at the same time small businesses employing as few as two people.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama not only provides access to
quality health care, it also works for the community. In 1987, it
set up the Alabama Child Caring Foundation (ACCF) in order to provide
the state’s uninsured children with the health care they require.
Moreover, it allows every Alabamian to participate in Emergency
Patient Information (EPI), a free service in which participants
can store emergency contact and medical information online. For
these reasons, it is also known as The Caring Company.
With its headquarters located in Birmingham, Alabama this company
employs more than 3,000 people across the state of Alabama. It runs
service centers in Montgomery, Huntsville, Mobile and downtown Birmingham.
Satellite offices can also be found in Florence, Anniston, Tuscaloosa,
Gadsden, Opelika, Dothan, Andalusia, Foley and Selma.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama will offer a broad range
of health care plans for individuals, families, Medicare beneficiaries
and groups. The company also offers plans for long term care and
the Federal Employee Program (FEP). You can also have additional
services and programs with your health coverage such as Preferred
Blue Accounts, Air Medical Services, Baby Yourself, Care Management
and Case Management. There may, however, be some Blue Cross plans
that do not provide these services. So, it is better if you get
in touch with your employer to find out if these are covered benefits
under your health plan.
Its Individual Blue Plan A is designed for individuals and families
in Alabama. With its Individual Blue Plan B (HSA Qualified), you
get high deductible health plan for use with Health Savings Accounts
(HSA). The Blue Link plan is a short term coverage for up to six
months for individuals in Alabama. Many local and national companies
choose Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama for their employees’
health care coverage. About 95 percent of Alabama doctors take part
in its Preferred Care Program (PMD – Preferred Medical Doctors).
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama also offers its Medicare Advantage
plans, a Medicare supplemental plan, and a regional Medicare prescription
drug plan. Preferred Blue Accounts are employer-sponsored programs
that give members the chance to create tax-advantaged health care
accounts as governed by the IRS tax code. Another employer-sponsored
plan is the Preferred Health Flexible Spending Account (FSA) in
which you can set aside pre-tax money through payroll deductions
for health care needs. With this account, you are to lose any funds
that you do not use during the plan.
