Minnesota
Chartered in 1933, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota is the
largest health plan in flu-prone Minnesota, providing health coverage
to over 2.7 million members. Apart from providing coverage for individuals
and groups of all sizes, the company also caters to the health insurance
needs of state and federal employees in each county throughout the
state. It serves over 125,000 members enrolled in government-sponsored
programs and 184,000 members enrolled in Medicare programs. It became
one of the pioneers in the field of consumer-directed health care
by providing such plans in 2003. The company at present serves 155,000
members in its Options Blue plans that combine a high-deductible
health plan with a financial account and support from health management
services and an online member service center. Blue Cross Blue Shield
of Minnesota offers its customers access to 100 percent of nonfederal
hospitals and over 93 percent of professional providers statewide.
Its plans cover the entire state and ensure access to providers
in all areas of the state. The company has been given ratings of
A and AA- by A M Best and S&P respectively.
BCBS of Minnesota offers a variety of individual and family health
plans all over the state that include:
Options Blue: It is a high deductible health plan with which you
can receive preventive care and prescription drug coverage. As the
plan connects with a Health Savings Account, you can so save money
on medical treatments long into the future. You can include dental
coverage if you like.
Aware Care: This is a PPO plan that has a choice of ten deductibles.
Aware care includes well-child care up until age six, dental, pre-natal
care with no deductible, and maternity care (in some plans).
In addition to these plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota
also offers members short-term medical coverage, long-term care
options, small and large group coverage and an affordable vision
plan.
In case you are between jobs, group plans or just out of college,
Insta-Care(SM) is the short term plan for you for a period of say
30, 60 or 90 days. With this plan, you are free to see any doctor
in its statewide network. Minnesota law restricts short-term coverage
to 365 days in any 555-day period.
Apart from plan benefits and health programs, members of BCBS of
Minnesota health plans can take advantage of some special features
depending on their plans. Members are entitled to receive up to
25 percent discounts on acupuncture and massage therapy from network
providers, and also savings on thousands of health care products.
The company offers a savings program called Rx Advantage for those
Medicare members who do not buy drug coverage, and for Aware Care
individual plan members with a plan deductible of $500 or more.
Using Rx Advantage, a member pays the lowest discounted price for
any drug on his or her prescription drug list. Some eyewear retailers
also offer discounts on eyewear to BCBS of Minnesota members.
