Florida Health Insurance

Health insurance is now usually available in two categories: individual and group.
Individual insurance is generally for those who are self-employed, or are employed by a business house that does not have a health plan, or who maintain a family and want individual insurance for family members. When you purchase an individual health insurance plan, you must pay an annual premium as well as a deductible for each insured dependent, up to a base amount. If you buy a group policy, you are required to pay a yearly premium, co-payments payable at each medical service, and a deductible payable before insurance begins making payment for your valid medical bills.

In Florida, the insurance companies can reject your application for individual health insurance if you have a health problem. You will qualify for a conversion policy if your insurance was dropped after having it for over 90 days and if you possess all the qualifications. If you are HIPAA eligible and not eligible for a conversion policy, you are guaranteed an individual policy from a private insurance company. If you have pre-existing conditions, you can face an exclusion period not exceeding two years. The company may even write a special rider to exclude the condition altogether. The State of Florida imposes no limitations on the price of an individual health policy. Your insurance, however, cannot be cancelled because of illness.

If you qualify for group insurance in Florida, insurance companies cannot turn down your health insurance because of health problems. In the case of you joining a new employer, there may be a waiting period for health coverage. HMOs can also need a waiting period which is known as affiliation period. If you have pre-existing conditions, your insurer can only review the preceding six months of your medical history. In the case of you having a pre-existing condition, coverage can be excluded for no more than one year. If you have had continuous, unbroken prior group coverage of over 63 days, you qualify for continuous coverage credit.

Florida guarantees small group health insurance for small businesses with staff strength of 50 or less. During policy renewal, the premium price can go up if a group member falls ill. In Florida, a self-employed person is allowed to purchase health insurance as a group of one under a group policy, if he/she can prove that his/her business generates the proper tax forms. Florida has a Medicaid program, as well as Kidcare and several other programs for families with lower incomes.

You should do a proper research before choosing the right health insurance quotes for you. However, it makes lot of sense to appoint professional health insurance agents and brokers who can be of great help in this regard with their valuable experience and expertise.

Some leading health insurance providers in Florida are Aetna, Assurant Health (formerly Fortis), Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Celtic, Golden Rule, Humana and VISTA Healthplan.
