New Jersey Health Insurance
Health insurance is now available in two broad categories: individual
and group. Those who opt for individual insurance are mostly self-employed,
or are employed by a company that does not have a health plan, or
who have a family and who need individual
insurance for their family members. If you buy an individual plan,
you must pay an annual premium as well as a deductible for each
insured dependent, up to a base amount.
On the other hand, if you purchase a group policy, you have to pay
an annual premium, co-payments payable at each medical service,
and a deductible payable before insurance begins paying for your
valid medical bills.
In New Jersey, insurers cannot deny you individual insurance because
of a health problem. They cannot also cancel your insurance on account
of illness. Individual coverage is enrolled in October every year.
HIPAA eligible residents can always buy individual health insurance
if they wish. Under New Jersey laws, insurance companies offer two
types of individual plans: comprehensive standardized policies and
the Basic and Essential Plan, which has less number of benefits.
New Jersey allows insurers to look back at your medical records
for the last six months prior to the beginning of the coverage.
If they detect a pre-existing condition, they can impose an exclusion
period with a maximum of one year at the beginning of coverage.
HIPAA eligible people, however, do not fall under this rule. Insurers
cannot attach exclusion riders due to these conditions. In New Jersey
pregnancy is a pre-existing condition, but complications arising
out of it are eligible to be covered.
A qualified person in New Jersey cannot be denied group insurance
or charged more for it due to a health problem. Your new employer
or new HMO can, however, need a waiting period before covering you.
Group insurance companies can review your medical history for the
last six months before coverage, to find out if you have a pre-existing
condition. If you have one, the insurer can seek an exclusion period
for coverage at the start of your new group insurance. In case you
have had unbroken coverage of over 63 days, you will get creditable
coverage.
Small businesses employing 50 people can neither be denied small
group insurance and nor can it be cancelled because of illness of
a person in the group. In New Jersey, self-employed people cannot
buy group health insurance. For joining business associations to
avail of this benefit, you can contact the New Jersey Department
of Banking and Insurance for regulations. New Jersey residents can
receive assistance through Medicaid and New Jersey Family Care
Selecting the right quotes is not easy; you should, therefore,
do a proper research before
making a final decision. However, it is always better to engage
experienced health insurance agents and brokers who can be of great
help in this regard.
