New York Health Insurance
Nowadays health insurance generally comes in two broad categories:
individual and group. People looking for individual insurance are
usually self-employed, or are employed by a company that does not
offer a health plan, or are those who have a family and who want
individual insurance for their family members. When you buy an individual
insurance, you have to pay an annual premium as well as a deductible
for each insured dependent, up to a base amount. If you purchase
a group policy instead, you need to pay an annual premium, co-payments
payable at each medical service, and a deductible payable before
the insurer begins paying for your legitimate medical bills.
New York does not allow insurance companies to deny you individual
insurance because of a health problem. HIPAA eligible people enjoy
the same rights to individual insurance. Insurers also cannot cancel
your insurance on account of illness. If you have a pre-existing
condition, New York allows the maximum exclusion period for the
condition to be 12 months, and the insurance company does have the
right to check your medical history for six months prior to coverage.
Elimination riders are not allowed also in New York. Although pregnancy
can be treated as a pre-existing condition, it can only be excluded
for 10 months. If you have had an unbroken coverage of over 63 days,
you are entitled to credit to be given for an exclusion period of
a pre-existing condition.
If you are qualified, New York regulations ensure that you cannot
be turned down or asked to pay more for your group health insurance
because of a health condition. New York also offers special considerations
for newborn or adopted, disabled, or full-time student children.
Your new boss may ask for a waiting period before offering group
insurance, and a new HMO may also require an affiliation period.
Insurers can review your medical records for the last six months
to find if you have a pre-existing condition. If you have one, the
insurer can require an exclusion period of not more than six months
under normal conditions. If you have maintained continuous unbroken
coverage of over 63 days, you qualify for creditable coverage.
In New York, small employers having staff strength between two
and 50 cannot be refused small group health insurance, nor can insurance
be cancelled due to illness in the employee group. Small businesses
with low income employees can purchase group insurance under the
Healthy New York program. If you are interested in joining a purchasing
pool for the purpose of group health insurance coverage, contact
the New York Department of Insurance. New York allows self-employed
individuals to purchase small group health insurance.
Medicaid, Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus, Healthy New York,
and Cancer Services Program Partnership are some of the programs
in New York that help residents with low to moderate incomes.
As choosing the right quotes are always tough, you should do some
research before making a final decision. However, it is better seeking
the help of professional health insurance agents and brokers in
this regard.
Some leading health insurance providers in New York are Aetna,
Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, Group Health Incorporated (GHI),
Guardian, Health Net, HIP Health Plan of New York, Oxford Health
Plans and UnitedHealthcare.
