If you have had continuous coverage of 30 days without any lapses, you are entitled to creditable coverage. Pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition, but not genetic information. In Ohio, if you are qualified, insurers cannot deny you group health insurance or slap additional charges if you have a health problem. There are additional regulations in Ohio for newborn, adopted, and disabled children. A new employer is allowed to seek a waiting period for offering group coverage. An HMO may also impose an affiliation period before coverage begins. Insurers are allowed a look back period for reviewing your medical history of six months prior to insurance coverage. If you are found to have a pre-existing condition, they may impose an exclusion period of not over 12 months before coverage begins. If you have had continuous coverage with no lapses for 63 days, qualify for creditable coverage. In Ohio, an employer employing two to 50 employees cannot be denied small group health insurance, nor can the insurance be cancelled due to sickness within the group. In the northeast region of Ohio, a business with two to 250 employees can join a purchasing pool for group health insurance. You should contact the Ohio Department of Insurance for regulations that govern such alliances and associations. Ohio does not allow self-employed people to purchase group coverage. In Ohio, there are several programs in operation, such as Medicaid, Best Rx Program, and Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Project.
