PacifiCare of Colorado
Founded as a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) in the 1970s,
PacifiCare has now turned into one of the largest health plans in
Colorado. The company caters to the needs of more than 328,000 members
in a 33 county area, offering a wide range of health plan options.
It boasts a contracted network of 1,100 primary care physicians,
2,400 specialist, and 27 hospitals, including 16 full service hospitals
in the Denver-metro area. These resources enable the company to
provide each member with the medical services to meet their health
care needs. In February, 1997 PacifiCare Health Systems acquired
FHP International but the contracted physicians, hospitals, pharmacies
and other providers stayed in the network.
Its parent organization, PacifiCare Health Systems today is one

plans have nearly 4 million members and more than 9 million customers
take part in specialty plan coverage. This United HealthCare company’s
core business is concentrated in Arizona, California, Colorado,
Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. The companies that
are part of the PacifiCare organization within these regions are
PacifiCare Behavioral Health, PacifiCare Dental and Vision, Prescription
Solutions, and Secure Horizons Senior Solutions. American Medical
Security Group (AMS) also became part of the group in 2004.
PacifiCare offers several plans including PacifiCare Signature ValueSM
(HMO), PacifiCare Signature POSSM (POS), PacifiCare SignatureOptions®
(PPO), PacifiCare Signature Independence® (Indemnity), and PacifiCare
Signature Freedom® (SDHP).
PacifiCare SignatureValueSM HMO focuses primarily on the quality
of care provided to members, by laying emphasis on prevention and
general wellness. Customers are free to directly contact primary
care physicians (PCPs), and form a strong relationship with their
doctors under this option.
PacifiCare SignaturePOSSM POS is a Point-of-Service option that
provides maximum flexibility to its customers. This plan provides
HMO savings and also the freedom to choose either an in-network
or out-of-network approach to healthcare.
PacifiCare SignatureOptionsSM PPO plans offer maximum freedom in
choosing a physician, as customers are allowed to consult any participating
physician or specialist without any extra charge. Members are also
given the freedom to see out-of-network doctors, albeit at a higher
out-of-pocket expense.
PacifiCare SignatureIndependenceSM Indemnity plan allows members
the freedom to visit any doctor or specialist without requiring
a referral. PacifiCare SignatureFreedomSM SDHP Plans are PPO based
that allows access to the widest physician network possible, as
well as the freedom of a Self-Directed Account (SDA). This SDA acts
as an 'allowance' that can be used at the member's discretion, for
preventative health services such as doctor's visits and covered
exams.
The company also offers special Value Added Programs such as Well-Baby
Care, Taking Charge of DiabetesSM and educational health resources
at no extra charge. Its Seniors Secure Horizons Medicare Advantage
Plans provide all the benefits of Medicare although you have to
pay only a low or no premiums, deductibles or co-payments, and with
almost no paperwork.
