Washington Health Insurance
Health insurance at present can be classified into two broad categories:
individual and group. Those looking for individual insurance are
mostly self-employed, or are employed by a company that does not
have provision for a health plan, or who have a family and who require
individual insurance for their family members. When you opt for
an individual policy, you are required to pay an annual premium
as well as a deductible for each insured dependent, up to a base
amount. If you prefer to have a group policy instead, you have to
pay an annual premium, co-payments payable at each medical service,
and a deductible payable before the insurer begins paying for your
legitimate medical bills.
In Washington, you can be denied individual health coverage because
of a health problem or history of problems. In case you are refused,
you can apply for Washington State Health Insurance Pool. There
are some situations, however, in which individual insurance companies
will be required to offer insurance. Washington offers special coverage
for newborn, adopted, and disabled children under individual health
policies. If an insurer has fulfilled their maximum number of enrollees,
they can turn down your application. If you have pre-existing conditions,
the exclusion period cannot be more than nine months. In Washington,
pregnancy is treated as a pre-existing condition. You will be entitled
to creditable coverage for the exclusion period if you have had
continuous, unbroken coverage of over 63 days. Your insurance cannot
be cancelled if you fall sick.
If you qualify for group coverage, you cannot be denied a policy
because of a health problem. Your new boss can ask for a waiting
period before offering group insurance. Group insurers are allowed
to look back at your health records for the prior six months before
coverage. In case you have a pre-existing condition, the insurer
can impose an exclusion period, the lengths of which vary with the
type of group coverage. If you have had continuous coverage for
nine months through a small employer or for three months from a
similar plan, you will qualify for creditable coverage.
Businesses with two to 50 employees cannot be denied small group
health insurance, nor can insurance be cancelled due to illness
in the group. In Washington, self-employed people can buy small
group health insurance. A business with three or more employees
can join a statewide alliance or purchasing pool which is approved
for the purpose of group health insurance availability. For more
information, you can contact the Washington State Office of the
Insurance Commission.
Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program, Breast and
Cervical Health Program, Washington Basic Health Plan, and Washington
State Health Insurance Pool are among the programs that help residents
with medical costs.
Since selecting the right quotes is not easy, you should do some
research before making a final decision. However, it makes sense
to appoint professional health insurance agents and brokers who
can be of great help in this regard.
