WellPoint - Anthem BlueCross BlueShield

Born in 2004, WellPoint is the largest company under the popular Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Though it is a member of the association, its operations are more or less independent in nature. It is a large organization that depends for its functionality on more than 42, 000 employees.

Situated in Indiana, WellPoint holds the license to provide health coverage to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Indiana, Georgia, Nevada, Missouri, Maine, Kentucky, New York and New Hampshire under the license Blue Cross. As a Blue Cross Blue Shield brand it also serves Ohio and Virginia, but in the latter the Washington area is not a part of their scheme. As for New York, WellPoint serves only major counties on behalf of the Blue Cross Blue Shield label. Apart from the states mentioned here, WellPoint also serves other states in the US but under the brand name Unicare.

Wellpoint came into existence when Anthem Inc. and WellPoint Health Networks Inc. opted for a merger in November, 2004. The initiation of Wellpoint Health Networks happened in order to undertake operations with regards to managed healthcare under the Blue Cross of California. The reason why a separate organization had to be started to help in the operations of the Blue Cross of California is its depleting financial stability.

When Blue Cross of California (BCC) started its operations in 1937 it was purely a non- profit organization. For the next 50 years it enjoyed a smooth reign but it was somewhere during the 1980’s that it suffered major financial jolts. The year after the initiation of the WellPoint Health Networks, the BCC gave it the shape of a publicly traded company. The other comprising member of WellPoint, Anthem Inc. has a history going back to the 1940’s when the two mutual insurance companies it was a collaboration of, were established.

Today WellPoint stands as a perfectly commercial health insurance provider specializing in managed health care. Plans they provide include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO’s), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO’s), indemnity insurance and Point of Service (POS) plans. Apart from this, the organization also deals in combination plans like limited benefit plans and plans that feature only hospital care. WellPoint customers range from small businesses to large organizations to individual takers.

Other than managed care plans, WellPoint’s offerings also include services like underwriting, claims processing, cost management services and actuarial services. Added to this, Wellpoint also offers several special products and services that revolve around exclusive benefits under disability insurance, dental and vision insurance and many other categories. The offerings of the organization go a step further to include administrative services in connection with the Medicare program. This program is specially meant for citizens of 65 years of age and over, people with disability and those in the last stages of renal failure. WellPoint has a massive marketing network that not only includes internal sales people but also brokers and agents working externally.
