What is a catastrophic health plan?
Catastrophic health plans are offered both on and off the exchange. These plans cover essential health benefits and require the highest allowable level of cost sharing. While the deductible for a catastrophic health plan is high, once it has been reached, the plan will pay 100% of covered health services from in-network providers.
In most cases, only young adults under the age of 30 can purchase catastrophic health plans. However, older people can also buy this kind of plan if there are no other qualified health plans available through the exchange that would cost less than a set amount of their income (8.3% in 2019).
Subsidies are not available with catastrophic health plans.
