Will I be automatically enrolled in my employer’s health plan?
In most cases, you will have to enroll in an employer-sponsored health plan yourself. However, some employers do automatically enroll new employees in a health plan. In this case, you will have to opt out of the plan if you do not want to receive coverage. Employers using auto-enrollment must provide employees with an opportunity to opt out of coverage or switch to a different plan (if more than one is offered).
If you are not automatically enrolled, you will typically have a chance to enroll when you are first hired. You may also enroll during your employer’s annual open enrollment period or through a special enrollment opportunity triggered by loss of other coverage or significant life events.
I missed open enrollment for my employer-sponsored coverage. Can I enroll through the exchange instead?
