Rising Demand for Caregivers
It has been estimated that care giving will be one of the fastest growing occupations in the state and the country in the coming years. The main reason behind it is that the elderly generation, popularly known as the baby boomers, increasingly prefers to stay at home as they age.
A recent survey estimates that round 26000 new aides looking after elderly care will be added by 2016. This includes around 760 in the region around the capital, according to the labor department. This figure does not include the already existing home health aides who number around 52320. They are basically caregivers who have medical skills and are expected to find work by 2016.
Most of the elderly and ailing feel that these caregivers are an essential part of their lives. They help them in activities like washing dishes, making beds and serving dinner. These are very ordinary jobs, but are indispensable for people who are ailing.
This is good news for an economy that is witness to the greatest threat of large scale unemployment seen in recent times. The demand is expected to far outpace supply and it is also expected that the demand may reach an all time high very soon.
The main reason behind this is that the baby boomer generation is getting older and statistics estimate that the number of people aged over 65 will reach around 88 million by 2050. The main reason behind this is the tremendous increase in health care facilities that have increased the average life span of a person. This is reflected in the increasing demand for care givers. It is also caused by an increasing demand on the part of the health care industry to shift these people from expensive in- hospital care to care at home.
This shift from nursing centers and hospital care to care at home has fuelled the need for more care givers. Some experts even feel that the situation may take the shape of a crisis.
There are certain people who work as full time care givers. However, there is an increasing trend among some to work part time at these jobs. These people basically help the aged with meal preparations, shopping and other aspects of housekeeping.
Another interesting development in recent years has been the increase in the number of more qualified candidates who are willing to take up these jobs. The main reason behind this is that the recent downturn in the economy. The lack of suitable jobs in major sectors has added to this trend. The large scale layoffs and salary cuts in most jobs have dealt a crippling blow to the employment market. For this reason, more people are willing to take up these jobs, even though they may be overqualified for it.
