Shaping Up the seniors
Audrey Hulser is just one of the many seniors who are taking advantage of the SilverSneakers programs to shape up and make fitness a part of their daily lives. She says that she joined the program so that she could lose a "little weight". She had no idea that she was ranked ninth internationally, according to the fitness points she earned. Audrey hulser is 87 and she is among a group of seniors who have become part of the SilverSneakers program. She has lost about 20 pounds and is looking to lose more, if she could only resist the temptations of the food at The Fountain!
Silversneakers offers a wide range of fitness activities for ladies of her group. One such program entails that the group walk down from the Fountains to the YMCA. It also offers yoga classes to members. Silversneakers is a fitness program designed for people aged 55 and above. It comes free to those who avail of Medicare plans under such health companies like Humana.
Most of the fitness program is geared towards helping senior citizens get back or maintain the fitness level that is required to maintain the activities of daily living. These include activities like turning over the shoulder during a drive and opening jars. Other activities include co ordination of the hand and the eye and others designed to sharpen the mind. The program uses music from the 40s and the 50s to make it easier for the people to relate to.
Silversneakers believe in promoting preventive care and they believe that by doing so, they indirectly contribute to the reduction in health costs. This is also true of seniors who already have a health problem. The program cites the example of a number of people who have benefitted from this approach to the extent that they had stopped medication also. An example is that of Beverly miller, 73, who stopped taking her asthma medications after she joined the program nearly a month ago. She says that the program gets you up and going and it results in instant flow of strength t the arms and legs.
Another exemplary instance is that of a member who has toured the Parthenon in Athens on foot! She declared, evidently, that the trams were for wimps! There is also the instance of a man who recovered from his cardiac condition that required a temporary stopping of his heart.
A basic advantage of this program is that it lets you work at your own pace. People are free to go for the strength classes, the yoga one or even a combination of both. The program encourages seniors to expand the level of their strengths. This is done through a variety of yoga, aerobics and other classes. Members report that people are amazed at their level of fitness, taking into account their age factor. This is also an encouragement that members depend on. Some, like Ms. Hulser, pride themselves on undertaking activities that would be difficult for people who are far younger!
