About Domestic Partner Health Insurance

To keep up with the changing norms of society and people's requirements domestic partner health insurance has changed considerably. In recent times, there have been changes in traditional and common-law marriage and same-sex civil unions and family health insurance has tried to keep up with all changes. Most major corporations, over the past 27 years, have decided to cover same-sex partners under their family and spousal health insurance policies.

In 1980s, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) started lobbying the insurance industry on behalf of transgender, gay and lesbian couples. HRC wanted employers to define same-sex couples or domestic partnership as: "They are emotionally and financially interdependent, do not have a different domestic partner or spouse, have reached the age of consent, and are not related."

In 1981 San Francisco considered legislation that would provide benefits and protections to unmarried adults, who're living together in committed relationships (both same-sex and opposite-sex). A free weekly newspaper in New York City, The Village Voice, in 1982, became the first private employer to extend benefits to domestic partners. By 1900, over 20 American employers began providing "spousal equivalent" benefits to their employees' same-sex partners. In 1992, Levi Strauss & Co. became the first Fortune 500 Company to offer health benefits to unmarried couples. By 2006, majority of the Fortune 500 Companies started offering the same health benefits to employees who lived with domestic partners as they did to married employees. In The 2007, Washington State legislature approved domestic partnerships and in May 2008, the Washington, D.C. City Council approved new provisions to its domestic partners law, bringing the law to a point where same-sex couples who register as domestic partners will receive most of the rights and benefits of marriage under District law.

Changes in Plan Being Considered by Federal Government

Some time back it appeared as if Federal government isn't in mood to follow the lead of private companies, the city and state governments. As the deputy director of the U.S. Office of Personal Management told Senate during September 2008 hearing that his agency isn't in favor of legislation, which would offer domestic partners of gay federal employees same benefits as enjoyed by partners of straight employees. However, this scenario could change in 2009 with arrival of new administration along with possible changes in health care.

Domestic Partner Health Insurance - Be Aware of Your Rights!

Most domestic partners (gay or straight) are rarely aware of the fact that they have similar rights and benefits as traditional couples. However, before purchasing any plan it's better to know what sort of domestic partner insurance will suit their requirements and how much cover they can afford. Since a lot has changed in society in last decade or so, same-sex couples should not hesitate to ask for information related to domestic partner health insurance. It very well could be within your right to have the domestic partner insurance that meets your needs whether you are a gay or straight couple.
