Free Health Insurance Coverage

With each passing year and with increase in healthcare expenses, it's fast an issue that needs to be addressed by individuals and government, equally and immediately. Sadly, millions of Americans cannot afford any kind of health cover. Soon, universal and free health insurance could be here sooner and making health insurance (mandatory as like car insurance) could emerge as a new trend. The best part, it will cover America's approx. 43 million uninsured. It could also address the problem of high health insurance expenses/rates because of which even employers are shying away from hiring new employees.

The Costs of Public Health Insurance

As per experts, it will cost billions of dollars to provide free health insurance cover to all uninsured Americans. If this plan came into existence then federal subsidies to hospitals, offered to treat the uninsured, could end as there'd no one without insurance. The savings could contribute towards offering subsidized health insurance to those in need.

Benefits of Universal Health Insurance

The biggest benefit of Universal health insurance would be that it'll lower the health insurance burden on employers, resulting in creation of more jobs in America. The U.S. carmakers paid about $1,300 in employee health costs to build one mid-size car in America. That very same car was built in Canada for practically nothing because health care system there offers provision for free health care insurance. Ford as per Vice Chairman Allan Gilmour, high health care costs are driving investors away from our country. If this issue of health care isn't addressed soon, we are in danger of losing our manufacturing base and many of our businesses.

If health insurance becomes mandatory, every Americans would be required to get health insurance plan from private providers, with the government providing subsidies to those who need them, meaning that some people will be eligible for free or subsidized medical insurance depending on their income.

Employers feeling the brunt of health care cost are increases and the burden of administrative costs are cutting back or dropping coverage causing workers to feel insecure. Most workers have little/no choice of health plans and accept whatever employers provide. One of the benefits of any mandatory health insurance law could be that premium costs would go down because everyone would share the insurance risk pool, including millions of healthy young people who don't have health insurance now because they don't think they need it.

There are families, adults and children, who get free health insurance via state and federal sponsored medical programs as per their income and family size. This coverage might be available for:

  • Birth control for women, men and teens
  • Pregnant women
  • Children under 19 years of age
  • Adults 65 years of age and over
  • Emergency health cover for immigrants
  • Women's health exams with mammogram and Pap test
  • Adults and families

Massachusetts Free Health Insurance

Citizens of the state of Massachusetts, at present are required to purchase health insurance. This rule successfully resolves the issue of uninsured without forcing employers to offer health insurance to employees. This way everyone accesses the group risk pools so that sicker people aren't denied coverage. A state-sponsored clearinghouse in Massachusetts gives individuals and small businesses access to group rates.

Still quite a high percentage of people in Massachusetts are uninsured and to address the issue of affordability, Massachusetts offers free health coverage for those below the poverty line; subsidies taper off as incomes rise to three times the poverty line. With individual health insurance costing about $6,000 a year and family coverage $12,000 or more, even reasonable group prices are out of reach for many.

The health insurance program for people with low incomes in Massachusetts is called Free Care. It covers care that people get at hospitals and health centers and is only mostly for emergencies. But Free Care doesn't pay for care at rehabilitation centers, nursing homes or doctors' offices. Immigrants in Massachusetts can also get Free Care and don't need Social Security number'. However, if not residing in Massachusetts, then they can only get free care for emergency services. To apply for the Massachusetts free health insurance program, fill out an application at the hospital or health center. The application will ask if you have any health insurance, such as MassHealth or the Children's Medical Security Plan. You need to apply for Free Care once a year. If you are denied Free Care, you can appeal the decision and ask them to reconsider. To do this, send a letter complaining about the hospital's decision.
