Why Do I have to Pay for Medicare?

You do not have to pay any premiums for Medicare Part A if you qualify for ‘premium-free Part A’. In order to get this benefit, you or your spouse must pay the Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters. For people who have paid less taxes than 40 quarters, a monthly premium has to be depending on the number of quarters worked. Most people have to pay a standard Medicare Part B premium.The basic premium is $135.50 in 2019, it goes up with the level of income of the member. People who are unable to pay the premiums can seek financial aid from the government.
