While its roots go back much further, Cigna as it exists today was founded in 1982 with the merger of INA Corporation and Connecticut General Corporation. Cigna is a global presence in the insurance industry, serving 95 million people across 30 countries. The company offers a variety of insurance products to individuals, families, and employers. It also acts as a parent company to several smaller insurers, many of them bearing the Cigna name.
Cigna offers a wide selection of health insurance plans, including health maintenance organization (HMO) plans, preferred provider organization (PPO) plans, and health savings account (HSA) plans. Medicare Advantage Plans (Medicare Part C) and Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance) are also available through Cigna. The company offers a range of supplemental insurance that can help customize a plan to better suit your needs. Supplemental insurance is available for cancer, heart attacks and strokes, and more. In addition to health insurance, Cigna has multiple dental plans to choose from as well as vision coverage and international insurance. The availability of certain plans will vary by state.
Cigna’s website is easy to use and allows users to access account information, view plan benefits, check the status of claims, and find in-network doctors and other healthcare providers in their area. It also allows you to search for specific medications and will tell you whether that particular medication is covered by your plan, what specific forms of it are or are not covered, and whether there are any important limitations to this coverage. Many of these features are also available through the company’s mobile applications.
Another member perk is the Healthy Rewards program. Through this program, members can receive discounts on health products and services such as dietary supplements, alternative medicines, gym memberships, and even certain medical procedures. Cigna also offers the Informed Choice Program, which shows members which local facilities will give them the best deal on MRIs, CT scans, and other services.
While Cigna coverage is accepted in many locations, its health plans are only available for purchase in 12 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Cigna dental coverage is available in additional states. Additionally, unlike many other large health insurers, Cigna does not offer short-term coverage (aside from short-term disability insurance).
Reputation and Financial Strength
Cigna has earned solid financial scores from the leading independent ratings agencies: an A (strong) from Standard & Poor’s, an A (excellent) from A.M. Best, and an A2 (good) from Moody’s. Ratings such as these are important as they help predict a company’s financial stability and its ability to pay out future claims. Though not as popular as some of the other insurers reviewed on this website, Cigna receives generally positive reviews from customers and industry professionals.
Cigna is a reputable insurer with a global presence and a variety of health plans to choose from. Availability of Cigna plans may be limited geographically, but they boast a large network of doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers, and their member programs offer great discounts and other resources. If you live in one of the states listed above, Cigna is a solid choice for your health coverage needs.

I would recommend considering Cigna when you are shopping for health insurance, April, 2019
Cigna has given me great service and coverage ever since I became a member. The rates are a bit on the higher side but I am willing to pay that bit more for better service. The monthly premiums that Cigna charges are among the expensive ones in the market - but for a good health insurance policy with good coverage you have to pay more. Unfortunately, I had to drop my Cigna coverage because I had to move to another state and Cigna does not have any presence here. I would recommend considering Cigna when you are shopping for health insurance.

I am finding it difficult to keep this coverage because of the high cost, February, 2019
The best thing about Cigna is their professional service. I get prompt responses when I have a query. Earlier, my claim was settled very smoothly. My family also is covered by Cigna health insurance. However, the premiums are quite high. I am finding it difficult to keep this coverage because of the high cost.
