Founded in 1961 as a nursing home company, Humana is now a leading name in the health insurance industry. The company offers a variety of insurance products and serves more than 13 million customers.
Humana has a great range of plans to choose from and offers more options than the average health insurer. Medicare plans are a particular focus for Humana, and the company offers both Medicare Advantage Plans (Medicare Part C) and Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap). Plans available include health maintenance organization (HMO) plans, preferred provider organization (PPO) plans, as well as some HMO point-of-service (HMOPOS) plans and high-deductible plans which can be used with flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs). Dental and vision insurance is also available, as is life insurance and various kinds of supplemental coverage, including accident insurance and critical illness insurance. Many of Humana’s plans also include coverage for in-home health services.
Pricing is another one of Humana’s strong suits. While not the cheapest health insurance on the market, Humana’s premiums are still notably lower than average. The company also offers numerous member discounts for vision and hearing supplies and services.
Humana has more to offer than just affordable health insurance – they also have great wellness programs. Most notable is HumanaVitality, an online rewards program which encourages users to develop healthier habits by awarding points for healthy choices. Points accrued through this program can be used for discounts on a variety of products and services, including sports equipment and certain healthy foods. Humana’s SilverSneakers Fitness Program acts as a secondary health rewards program for those receiving Medicare coverage through the company. There is also the Humana RightSource program, which allows members to order up to a three-month supply of their prescriptions online.
The company has many online tools that can help members track claims, make payments, and find local doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies. There are also four different mobile apps available from Humana. MyHumana allows members to access and manage their accounts, MyHealth lets users track health goals, and HumanaPharmacy helps users manage prescriptions. HumanaVitality also gets its own app, allowing members to record, track, and redeem their points. Humana’s apps can also help you find a local doctor or pharmacy and can be used to set important alerts and reminders.
In addition to their online presence, Humana also has physical locations, known as Humana Guidance Centers, in many of the areas it serves. These centers offer a variety of services, including cooking and exercise classes, health-related seminars, and other activities. These centers are also great places to learn more about Humana and the plans it offers.
The main thing that will eliminate Humana as an option for many is the geographic limitation of its plans. Humana’s health plans are only available in 22 states: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin. This is still a larger area than that covered by some other major health insurers, but it does mean that these plans simply won’t be an option for many. While Humana’s plans may not be available for purchase in every state, the company does offer a nationwide PPO plan which allows enrollees to find providers across the US – a great choice for those who travel or for parents with children going to college out-of-state.
Humana does not offer short-term health insurance, nor does it offer international coverage.
Reputation and Financial Strength
Humana received an A- (excellent) from A.M. Best, a BBB+ (good) from Standard & Poor’s, and a Baa3 (adequate) from Moody’s. Scores from independent ratings agencies such as these are important, as they help illustrate a company’s financial strength and predict its ability to pay out future claims. Humana also has an excellent reputation and is highly recommended by many customers and industry professionals. It has even won awards for health plan member satisfaction in several of the states it serves.
An experienced and respected name in the health insurance industry, Humana has been helping people live better for over 50 years. It offers a great variety of plans at competitive prices, and members get added benefits in the form of programs like HumanaVitality and convenient mobile apps. The company is also engaged with the community through its Guidance Centers. While its geographic limitations mean that Humana coverage is not available to everyone, it should absolutely be one of the top choices for those who do live in the states listed above.

The best health insurance plans in the market right now in my area, March, 2019
This is my fifth year as a customer of Humana health insurance. This is one of the best health insurance plans in the market right now in my area. I have no complaints against this company’s coverage or service – but the rates have been going up too much over the past of couple of years.
I am not at all happy with the coverage that I get from Cigna, February, 2019
I am not at all happy with the coverage that I get from Cigna. The rates are excessively high for me, since I am a retired person. I had problems with claims settlement and am very dissatisfied with the unprofessional service. I will not continue with this company anymore.
