UnitedHealthcare is one of the largest and most respected health insurers on the market today. Along with their parent company, UnitedHealth Group, they have more than 40 years’ experience in the health insurance industry and provide medical benefits to people and businesses in all 50 states as well as dozens of other countries. UnitedHealthcare offers insurance for individuals, families, and employers and serves millions of customers worldwide.
A variety of plans are available through UnitedHealthcare, including health maintenance organization (HMO) plans, preferred provider organization (PPO) plans, Medicare plans, and plans compatible with health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs). Dental and vision coverage are also available through UnitedHealthcare, as are short-term, life, student, disability, critical illness, and accident insurance.
Not all plans offered by UnitedHealthcare require members to stay within a certain network. Even for plans that do, UHC’s network of more than 1.3 million providers and more than 6,000 hospitals means that there are plenty of options to choose from.
One of the biggest advantages to UnitedHealthcare’s coverage comes in the form of online tools and features. Through their online account, members can view plan benefits, file and check the status of claims, order prescriptions, track expenses, access wellness programs, and find local doctors, dentists, hospitals, and other healthcare providers. Many of these same features are available on the company’s mobile app, which also lets members view their health records. Other great online tools include myEasyBook, which can be used to set up doctor’s appointments 24/7, and myHealthCare Cost Estimator, which provides estimates for how much certain health procedures will cost under one’s plan.
UnitedHealthcare also offers health-promoting programs such as Rally, which helps members develop and work towards health-related goals. Members can also earn rewards for participating in healthy activities and receive discounts on hearing aids, contact lenses, alternative treatments, and health-boosting programs such as those for weight loss or quitting smoking.
The plans available through UnitedHealthcare tend to be more expensive than average, though pricing will vary based on a variety of factors. The range of health plans offered through UnitedHealthcare is also not as extensive as some of their competitors’. Last but not least, it is important to note that some plans and benefits are state-specific, so something you see advertised online may not always be available in your area.
Reputation and Financial Strength
UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, has received solid financial strength ratings from leading independent ratings agencies: an A (excellent) from A.M. Best, an A+ (strong) from Standard & Poor’s, and an A3 (good) from Moody’s. Ratings such as these are important because they help illustrate a company’s financial standing and predict that company’s ability to pay out claims in the future. UnitedHealthcare also scores well in other areas and receives generally positive reviews, though it is not as popular as some of the other insurers reviewed on this site.
UnitedHealthcare is a respected insurer providing health benefits to millions of people worldwide. While its plans are more expensive than average, UnitedHealthcare offers nationwide coverage, a large provider network, and great tools and features for managing one’s health online and on the go. A strong, experienced company backed by the largest health carrier in the United States, UnitedHealthcare’s plans are definitely worthy of consideration.

I am very satisfied with the plan, March, 2019
I got my health insurance from UnitedHealthcare through AARP a few years ago. I have a Medicare Advantage plan. I am very satisfied with the plan and have recommended my friends to go for this plan.
now I am quite satisfied about the coverage and service, February, 2019
Recently I had to move from another insurance company to UnitedHealthcare. Though at first I was apprehensive about this company, now I am quite satisfied about the coverage and service. I had a big claim for a surgery a couple of months back. UnitedHealthcare took care of it very efficiently – the claim was settled quickly.
Great Coverage, High Price, January, 2019
I have no issues with the coverage given to me by UnitedHealthcare. I have been their customer since a few years and have filed a claim also, which was settled quite promptly. However, it is the premiums that I am concerned about.I am retired – so it is very difficult for me to afford the high premiums.
