Types of Travel Insurance

There are different types of travel insurance that offer you all the security you need when you are travelling to a foreign country that may or may not be new to you. There are a number of inconveniences you may face when you are travelling abroad. Buying a travel insurance plan is the best way to secure that.

There are different types of travel insurance that are meant to deal with different needs you may have when you are travelling abroad. Here is what you would normally expect to find when you are looking at the different types of travel insurance.

Package plans

These are the most popular of all the travel insurance plans you will find. These travel insurance plans are ideal for tours, cruises, air trips and vacation home rentals. These plans are ideal for domestic and foreign travel, whether you are undertaking it for leisure or business.

These plans are pre bundled by the carrier and may include a wide range of covers including:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Travel delay
  • Personal effects and baggage
  • Baggage delay
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Travelerís assistance
  • Medical expense

Some plans may also offer you additional cover in the form of accidental death, flight accidental death and coverage for rental cars. This insurance is basically rated according to three factors including your current age, the total cost of your trip and the length of the trip.

Medical plans

These plans typically cover medical expenses when you are on a trip abroad. Most individual or group health plans will not offer you coverage outside the area, apart from emergencies. For this reason, it is better to check with your insurer to find out whether you need this cover.

Flight accidental death plans

This includes a limited form of the accidental death benefit. It provides you protection during the time you board the flight, travel on it and alight from it. Some plans may offer this as a package while some provide it to you in the form of an option.

Medical evacuation/repatriation plans

This coverage is also an option that you can separately provide for in your plan. This provides you overage in case you need to be evacuated to the nearest medical facility for treatment or a condition. It also provides you covers in case you need to be transported back home. This type of coverage may be very handy in case you face a medical emergency and need to be evacuated to your home country.

The different types of travel insurance plans are meant to cater to different travel needs and individual requirements. It is always a better to have an idea about the basic requirements in your plans and other covers you might want in addition. This will make it easier for you to look at the plans in detail and chose the one that is most suitable for you.
